CTA — Call To Action
Call To Action — the button or line telling people what to do next ("Enroll now").
What it means
CTA stands for Call To Action. It is the instruction that tells people exactly what to do next. It can be a website button, a line in an Instagram caption or a spoken line in a video.
Examples include "Enroll now", "Book a free demo", "Call us today", "Shop the sale" and "Download the brochure".
How it works
Even interested people may not know the next step unless you tell them clearly. A good CTA removes that confusion.
Strong CTAs usually share a few qualities:
- Action words at the start, like book, get, join or start.
- A clear benefit, such as "Get your free study plan".
- Visibility, so the button stands out in colour and size and is easy to tap on a phone.
- One main goal, instead of five competing buttons.
A simple example
A dance academy in Bengaluru has a web page for its summer Bollywood workshop. The only button at the bottom says "Submit". Few people click it.
The owner changes the button to "Book my free trial class" and adds one near the top too. She also adds a short line under it: "No payment needed. Batches start 1 May."
Now visitors know exactly what happens next.
Why it matters
The CTA is the bridge between interest and action. Without a clear CTA, even a great ad and page can lose people. A well-written CTA can improve your click-through rate on ads and your conversion rate on landing pages.
Beginner tips
- Try first-person wording, like "Start my free trial", and test it against "Start your free trial".
- Match the CTA to the stage of the customer. A new visitor may prefer "Learn more" over "Buy now".
- If your CTA says free, do not ask for payment on the next screen.
- Common mistake: vague buttons like "Submit" or "Click here" that say nothing about the benefit.
