Impressions — How often you are seen
How many times your content or ad was shown.
What it means
Impressions is the number of times your content or ad was displayed on a screen. Every time your post, banner or search ad appears in front of someone, that counts as one impression. It does not matter whether they clicked, liked or even noticed it.
How it works
Platforms like Google Ads, Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and LinkedIn count an impression each time your content loads in a user's feed, search results or app. If the same person sees your ad three times, that is three impressions.
This is where reach comes in. Reach is the number of unique people who saw your content at least once. Impressions count every view; reach counts every person.
Frequency = Impressions ÷ Reach
A simple example
A café in Pune runs an Instagram ad for its new cold coffee. After one week, the report shows:
- Impressions: 12,000
- Reach: 4,000
So the average person saw the ad 3 times (12,000 ÷ 4,000). If 240 people clicked, the click-through rate is 240 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 2%.
Why it matters
Impressions are the starting point of your results. Nobody can click, visit or buy if they never see you. Many other metrics, such as CTR and CPM, are calculated using impressions.
They also help you judge awareness campaigns. But high impressions alone do not mean success. A post seen by thousands but ignored by everyone has not really worked.
Beginner tips
- Always look at impressions together with reach, so you know whether you are reaching new people or repeating yourself.
- Watch frequency. If it keeps rising while clicks keep falling, people may be getting bored of your ad. Refresh the creative.
- Do not celebrate impressions on their own. Pair them with clicks, engagement or conversions.
- Each platform counts impressions slightly differently, so compare numbers within the same platform.
