Micro-influencer — Smaller, niche creators
A creator with a smaller but highly engaged, niche audience.
What it means
A micro-influencer is a content creator with a smaller but loyal audience, usually focused on one topic or region, such as food in Pune, fitness for beginners or budget travel in the Northeast. There is no official definition. Follower ranges like roughly 10,000 to 100,000 are often quoted, but different agencies use different numbers, so treat any range as a rough guide.
How it works
Micro-influencers often feel like a trusted friend rather than a celebrity. When a brand partners with one, the creator makes content featuring the product in their own style. The deal can be:
- Paid: a fixed fee for a Reel, post or story
- Barter: free products or services in exchange for honest content
- Commission: a share of sales made through a code or link
In India, paid or sponsored posts must be clearly disclosed under ASCI guidelines, for example with labels like "#ad" or "Paid partnership". This applies even when payment is in free products.
A simple example
A Pune café wants students to visit. Instead of approaching a big celebrity, it invites three local food creators who each have a city-focused following. Each creator posts a Reel tasting the café's new menu, clearly marked as a collaboration, and shares a code for ₹50 off. Suppose the codes are used 90 times in two weeks; the café can see which creator brought the most visitors and invite them back.
Why it matters
Micro-influencers are often more affordable and approachable than big names, and their audiences can be closely matched to a brand. For small businesses with limited budgets, several micro-influencers in the right niche can be a smart start.
Beginner tips
- Check engagement and comment quality, not just follower count.
- Pick creators whose audience matches your customers and location.
- Give a clear brief but let creators speak in their own voice.
- Common mistake: skipping the ad disclosure, which breaks ASCI rules and damages trust.
