UGC — User-Generated Content

Content created by customers — reviews, photos, videos — rather than by the brand.

What it means

User-generated content, or UGC, is any content created by customers or fans rather than by the brand itself. It includes product reviews, star ratings, unboxing videos, photos on Instagram, testimonials and comments.

When a happy customer posts a photo wearing your kurta and tags your shop, that is UGC.

How it works

UGC usually happens in two ways:

  • Naturally — customers love a product and share it on their own.
  • Encouraged — brands invite customers to share, for example through a hashtag campaign, a contest or a request for reviews after purchase.

Brands then collect the best UGC and reuse it on their social media, website, product pages or ads, where it acts as real-life proof.

Always ask for permission and give credit before reposting someone's content. A simple message like "We loved your photo! Can we share it on our page with credit to you?" shows respect. Using someone's photo or video without permission can upset customers and may create legal problems.

A simple example

A handmade jewellery brand in Jaipur asks customers to post photos with the hashtag #MyJaipurSparkle. Each month, one tagged customer wins a ₹1,000 voucher.

Soon, dozens of customers share photos. The brand messages the owners of the best ones, gets their permission and reposts them with credit. New visitors now see real people wearing the jewellery.

Why it matters

People often trust other customers more than they trust brand advertising. UGC acts as social proof, making new buyers feel more confident. It also gives brands a steady supply of fresh, authentic content without expensive photoshoots, and it builds a sense of community around the brand.

Beginner tips

  • Make it easy to share: create a simple, memorable hashtag and mention it everywhere.
  • Politely ask for reviews after a purchase, when customers are happiest.
  • Reply to and thank people who share content about you.
  • Common mistake: reposting customer photos without asking. Always get permission and tag the creator.
