Backlink — Inbound link from another website

A link from another website to yours — a signal of trust for search engines.

What it means

A backlink is a link on someone else's website that points to your website. If a Pune food blogger writes about your café and links to your site, that is a backlink for you.

Backlinks are also called inbound links or incoming links.

How it works

A backlink works like a recommendation. Google has said links are one of the signals it uses to judge which pages are useful and trustworthy.

Not all backlinks are equal, though:

  • Quality matters more than quantity. One link from a respected, relevant website can be worth more than many links from random, low-quality sites.
  • Relevance matters. A link from a food website makes more sense for a café than a link from a car repair blog.
  • Some links are marked "nofollow" or similar, which tells search engines not to treat them as a strong endorsement.

Backlinks can also send real visitors to your site.

A simple example

A new handloom saree brand in Varanasi has a nice website but very few visitors.

The founder writes a helpful guide on spotting a real Banarasi silk saree. A fashion blogger links to it, and a local news site features the brand in a story about weavers.

Now the site has a few good, relevant backlinks. Over time, this can help it appear more often in search and bring referral visitors.

Why it matters

Backlinks help search engines discover your pages and judge their trustworthiness. For competitive keywords, great content alone is sometimes not enough.

Beginner tips

  • Create content worth linking to, such as useful guides, original photos or local information.
  • Get listed in genuine local and industry directories, and build real relationships with bloggers and journalists.
  • Check which sites link to you in the Links report of Google Search Console.
  • Common mistake: buying cheap backlinks in bulk. This goes against Google's spam policies and can hurt your site.
