SEO — Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation — improving a site to rank higher in unpaid search results.

What it means

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is the work you do to help your website appear higher in Google's free (unpaid) results for searches related to your business.

You do not pay for these positions. You earn them with useful, clear, trustworthy pages.

How it works

Search engines use programs called crawlers to discover pages and store them in a huge database called an index. When someone searches, the engine ranks the pages it thinks answer best.

SEO usually has three parts:

  • On-page SEO: writing helpful content, using clear titles and headings, and including the words people actually search for.
  • Technical SEO: making sure your site loads fast, works well on mobile and can be crawled easily.
  • Off-page SEO: earning links and mentions from other trusted websites.

Google does not publish its full ranking formula, so nobody can guarantee the top spot.

A simple example

Imagine a small café in Pune called Chai Corner. When people search "best cafe near FC Road", the café does not appear at all.

The owner writes a clear homepage mentioning FC Road, adds the menu with prices in ₹, sets up a free Google Business Profile and asks happy customers for reviews. Over a few months, the café starts appearing in local results and gets more visitors without ads.

Why it matters

Many people start their buying journey with a search. If you do not show up, they find your competitors instead. You do not pay for each SEO visit, and good rankings can keep bringing visitors for a long time. Results usually build slowly, so be patient.

Beginner tips

  • Set up Google Search Console for free to see which searches bring people to your site.
  • Write for humans first, not for search engines. Answer the question clearly.
  • Check that your site loads quickly and works well on a mobile phone.
  • Common mistake: stuffing the same keyword again and again. It hurts readability and does not help.
