Copywriting
Writing words that persuade people to take action — ads, headlines, product pages.
What it means
Copywriting is the skill of writing words that persuade people to take an action. That action could be clicking an ad, signing up for a webinar, calling a shop or buying a product. The words themselves are called "copy".
You see copywriting everywhere: ad headlines, Instagram captions, product descriptions, email subject lines, website banners and even the text on a button.
Copywriting is not the same as copyright. Copyright is a legal right that protects original creative work from being copied. Copywriting is writing to sell or persuade. The words sound alike, but they mean completely different things.
How it works
Good copy usually follows a simple flow:
- Grab attention with a clear, relevant headline.
- Show you understand the problem your reader faces.
- Explain the benefit, not just the features — how will life get better?
- Build trust with proof such as reviews or a guarantee.
- Ask for action with a clear call to action, like "Book your free demo".
Many copywriters use the AIDA framework: Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.
A simple example
A coaching institute in Kota writes an ad: "We offer JEE coaching with experienced faculty."
A rewrite: "Stuck on Physics numericals? Join our free 3-day JEE problem-solving workshop and learn the shortcuts toppers use. Seats limited — register today."
The second version speaks to a real problem, promises a clear benefit and ends with a specific action.
Why it matters
The same product, the same budget and the same audience can give very different results depending on the words used. Strong copy can improve click-through rates and conversions on ads, landing pages and emails. Weak copy wastes money.
Beginner tips
- Write the way you speak. Simple words beat fancy ones.
- Focus on "you" and the reader's benefit, not "we" and your company.
- Write several headlines and test them to see which works best.
- Common mistake: making false or exaggerated promises. Honest copy builds long-term trust.
