Frequency capping — Limiting repeat views

Limiting how many times the same person sees your ad in a given period.

What it means

Frequency is the average number of times one person sees your ad. Frequency capping sets a limit on that number for a chosen time period, for example no more than three times a day per person. It stops your ad from following the same people again and again.

How it works

The formula: frequency = impressions ÷ reach. If your ad got 10,000 impressions and reached 2,500 people, the average frequency is 4.

In Google Ads, you can set frequency caps on Display and Video campaigns, choosing a limit per day, week or month. On Meta (Facebook and Instagram), frequency controls are available with certain buying options, such as reach-based buying; for other campaigns you mainly watch the frequency figure in your reports and adjust audiences or creatives. Settings change over time, so check your account.

A simple example

A Kota coaching institute runs a video ad for its new NEET batch to students in Rajasthan. Without a cap, a small group of students sees the ad over and over. Imagine one student seeing it 15 times in a week: they start finding it irritating and scroll straight past. The institute sets a cap of, say, three views per person per week. Now the same budget reaches more different students instead of repeating to the same few.

Why it matters

Some repetition helps people remember your brand, but too much wastes money and causes ad fatigue, where people stop noticing your ad or start disliking it. A sensible cap spreads your budget across a wider audience and keeps your brand's image positive.

Beginner tips

  • Watch frequency alongside click-through rate; if frequency rises and CTR drops, people are tired of your ad.
  • Allow slightly higher caps for warm retargeting audiences than for cold ones.
  • Refresh your creatives regularly so repeat views feel less repetitive.
  • Common mistake: setting a cap so low that people never see your ad enough to remember it.
