Google Search Console — GSC

Google's free tool that shows how your site appears in Google Search — queries, clicks and indexing issues.

What it means

Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows how your website performs in Google Search: which searches bring people in, how often your pages appear, how many people click, and whether Google has trouble indexing any pages. It covers organic (unpaid) search only, not paid ads.

How it works

First you add your site as a property and verify that you own it, either as a Domain property (every version of your site) or a URL-prefix property (one specific address). Then the key reports start filling up:

  • Performance report: search queries, clicks, impressions, click-through rate (CTR) and average position.
  • Page indexing report: which pages are indexed, and why others are not.
  • URL Inspection tool: check one page and request indexing after you update it.
  • Sitemaps: submit your XML sitemap so Google can discover your pages more easily.
  • Core Web Vitals report: whether real visitors find your pages fast and stable.

A simple example

Priya runs a café in Pune. Search Console shows her menu page gets many impressions for "best cold coffee in Koregaon Park" but few clicks. She rewrites the page title and meta description to mention cold coffee, then checks back weeks later. She also spots that her new "Events" page is not indexed, so she requests indexing through URL Inspection.

Why it matters

Search Console is the most direct way to hear from Google itself. It helps you find keywords you already rank for, fix problems that hide pages from search, and measure whether your SEO work is paying off.

Beginner tips

  • Set it up on day one so data starts collecting early.
  • Prefer a Domain property, so you don't miss www or non-www data.
  • Look for queries with high impressions but low CTR. These are often quick wins.
  • Common mistake: expecting it to show what visitors do on your site. For that, use GA4 alongside it.
