Lead generation
Attracting potential customers and collecting their details so you can follow up.
What it means
Lead generation means finding people who might want to buy from you and getting their contact details, such as a name, phone number or email address. A lead is simply a potential customer who has shown some interest.
Lead generation lets you stay in touch until they are ready to buy.
How it works
A typical lead generation process has three parts:
- Attract: people discover you through social media posts, search results, ads or word of mouth.
- Capture: you offer something useful in exchange for their details, such as a free guide, a demo class or a discount. They fill in a short form on a landing page, a WhatsApp chat or an Instagram lead form.
- Follow up: you contact them with helpful information, answer their questions and invite them to buy.
A simple example
A coaching institute in Kota runs an Instagram ad offering a free mock test for students preparing for JEE. To get the test, students enter their name, phone number and class on a landing page.
In one month, 400 students sign up. The counsellors call each one, share their score and explain the full course. Say 40 students join. Those 400 sign-ups were the leads, and the 40 admissions came from following up properly.
Why it matters
Without leads, a business depends on luck and walk-in customers. A steady flow of leads makes sales more predictable. It also lets you measure which channels work best, so you can spend your marketing budget where it brings real enquiries rather than just likes.
Beginner tips
- Ask only for the details you truly need. Shorter forms usually get more sign-ups.
- Offer something genuinely useful, not just "contact us".
- Reply quickly. A lead who hears back the same day is more likely to stay interested.
- Common mistake: collecting hundreds of leads and never following up. A lead is only valuable if you talk to it.
