Looker Studio — Formerly Google Data Studio
Google's free tool for turning data from GA4, Search Console, Sheets and more into shareable dashboards.
What it means
Looker Studio is Google's free reporting tool. It takes numbers from GA4, Google Search Console, Google Ads, Google Sheets and more, and turns them into clear, visual dashboards. Until 2022 it was called Google Data Studio, so you may still hear that name.
How it works
You start by adding a data source through a connector. Connectors exist for GA4, Search Console, Google Ads, Sheets, BigQuery and many more. Then you drag elements onto a page:
- Scorecards for single numbers, such as total sessions or conversions
- Charts such as line graphs, bar charts and pie charts
- Tables that list pages, campaigns or keywords
- Date-range controls and filters so viewers can change the period or focus on one city or device
You can even blend two data sources, for example ad spend from Google Ads with leads from a Sheet. The report refreshes with fresh data automatically, and you share it just like a Google Doc, with view or edit access.
A simple example
A coaching institute in Kota runs Google Ads. Every Monday, the owner used to ask the intern for screenshots from three tools. Instead, the intern builds one dashboard showing ad spend in ₹, website sessions from GA4, top search queries from Search Console and enquiries from a Google Sheet. Now the owner simply opens a link and picks "Last 7 days".
Why it matters
Clients and bosses rarely want to log in to GA4. Looker Studio saves hours of manual reporting and makes your KPIs easy to see and discuss.
Beginner tips
- Start with a free Google template and customise it instead of building from scratch.
- Keep each page focused on one question, such as "Where do our visitors come from?"
- Add a date-range control to every report so viewers can explore on their own.
- Common mistake: cramming twenty charts onto one page. Fewer, clearer charts tell a better story.
