Positioning — Your place in the customer's mind

How you want customers to see your brand compared with the alternatives.

What it means

Positioning is the place your brand holds in a customer's mind compared with the other options. When someone thinks "cheapest", "most premium", "fastest" or "best for beginners", which brand comes to mind? Positioning is your deliberate choice about which of those ideas you want to own.

How it works

Start by understanding three things: who your target customer is, what they really need, and what alternatives they already use. Then pick a clear, believable difference that matters to them. Many marketers write a short positioning statement using this simple template:

For the target customer who has a specific need, our brand is the category that delivers a key benefit, unlike the main alternative.

This statement is an internal guide, not an advertising slogan. It shapes your messaging, visuals, pricing and channels. Your unique selling proposition (USP) and brand voice should both support it.

A simple example

A coaching institute in Kota competes with dozens of big names. Instead of claiming to be "the best", it writes: For Class 11 students who feel lost in large batches, Kota Focus Classes is the coaching institute that keeps batches small and gives every student weekly one-to-one doubt sessions, unlike big institutes where students rarely speak to teachers. Now its ads, website and counselling calls all repeat the same idea: personal attention.

Why it matters

Customers see many similar options and will not remember all of them. A sharp position makes your brand easy to recall and easy to choose. It also makes digital marketing easier, because your ad copy, landing pages and social posts all have one clear message to repeat.

Beginner tips

  • Choose one main idea to own, not five.
  • Make sure the difference is true and something customers actually care about.
  • Check how competitors position themselves before you decide.
  • Common mistake: using vague claims like "best quality" that every competitor also uses.
