USP — Unique Selling Proposition
Unique Selling Proposition — the one clear reason a customer should choose you over others.
What it means
USP stands for Unique Selling Proposition. It is the single, clear reason why a customer should pick your business instead of a competitor. It answers the customer's silent question: "Why you?"
A good USP is specific, easy to understand and something your competitors cannot easily claim.
How it works
To find your USP, look at three things together:
- Your customer: what do they really care about? Price, speed, quality, trust or convenience?
- Your competitors: what are they already promising?
- Your strengths: what do you do better or differently?
Your USP sits where these overlap: something customers value, that you deliver well, and that others are not offering. Then use it everywhere: your website headline, ads and social media bio.
Vague phrases like "best quality" or "customer satisfaction" are not USPs, because every business says them.
A simple example
Imagine three tiffin services in Bengaluru. Two of them say "tasty home-style food". The third says: "Home-cooked meals with no onion or garlic, delivered hot by 1 pm or your lunch is free."
That third business has a clear USP. It speaks to a specific group of customers, makes a promise that is easy to check and sets it apart from the rest. A customer looking for this kind of food immediately knows which service to choose.
Why it matters
People see many ads every day and scroll quickly. A sharp USP helps you stand out in seconds. It also makes your marketing easier, because every ad, post and landing page has one clear message to repeat. Without a USP, businesses often end up competing only on price.
Beginner tips
- Talk to real customers and ask why they chose you. Their answers often reveal your USP.
- Keep it to one short sentence.
- Make sure you can actually deliver on the promise.
- Common mistake: listing ten features instead of choosing one strong reason.
