Short-form video — Reels, Shorts and more
Short vertical videos, like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, made to grab attention in seconds.
What it means
Short-form video means quick, vertical videos made to be watched on a phone. In India, the main places for them are Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Facebook Reels. TikTok has been banned in India since 2020, so Indian brands focus on the other platforms. These videos are usually under a minute or so, and the first few seconds decide whether someone keeps watching or scrolls away.
How it works
The platform's algorithm notices how viewers react: do they watch till the end, replay, comment, share or save? Videos that hold attention reach more people, including non-followers. Most good short videos follow a simple pattern:
- Hook: a question, bold line or striking visual in the first second or two
- Value: one quick tip, story, demo or laugh
- Call to action: follow, save, comment or visit the profile link
On-screen captions help too, because many people watch with the sound off.
A simple example
A Pune café wants more weekend visitors. Instead of posting a plain photo of its cold coffee, it films a 20-second Reel: the barista pouring coffee over ice, a close-up, and the text "Pune's thickest cold coffee? You decide." It ends with "Tag a friend you'd bring here." Friends tag each other, the Reel reaches more people nearby, and a few new customers mention the video when they visit.
Why it matters
Short-form video is one of the main ways people discover new brands on social media. It helps small businesses reach new people without paying for ads, and shows the real people and products behind the brand.
Beginner tips
- Grab attention in the first two seconds; skip the long intro.
- Shoot vertically and add on-screen text for people watching on mute.
- Post regularly and check which videos people watch till the end.
- Common mistake: copying a trend that has nothing to do with your brand just to chase views.
