YouTube — Video search and advertising

The world's biggest video platform — a search engine, a social channel and an ad network in one.

What it means

YouTube is Google's video platform. For marketers, it plays three roles. It is a search engine, because people type questions like "how to make filter coffee" into it. It is a social channel, where creators build loyal subscribers and communities through comments. And it is an ad network, where businesses pay to show video ads to the right audience.

How it works

Every video has a title, description, thumbnail and tags. YouTube uses these, along with how viewers behave, to decide which videos to suggest and rank in search. This is called YouTube SEO. Adding chapters (timestamps) and captions helps both viewers and discovery.

There are two main formats:

  • Long-form videos, usually horizontal, great for tutorials, reviews and deeper stories
  • Shorts, vertical videos under a few minutes, great for quick tips and reaching new viewers

Creators track performance in YouTube Studio, which shows views, watch time, audience retention (how long people keep watching) and impressions click-through rate, which tells you how often people click after seeing your thumbnail.

YouTube ads are created and managed through Google Ads using video campaigns.

A simple example

A café in Pune starts a channel. It posts a long-form video called "How We Make Our Cold Brew" with chapters and captions, plus short clips of latte art as Shorts. The Shorts bring in new local viewers, while the tutorial keeps appearing in searches. Later, the café runs a small video ad targeting people near Koregaon Park.

Why it matters

People use YouTube to learn and compare before buying. A useful video can attract viewers for years, building trust for any brand.

Beginner tips

  • Design a clear, readable thumbnail and a title that matches what people search.
  • Hook viewers in the first few seconds, then check audience retention to see where they leave.
  • Use Shorts to get discovered and long-form videos to build trust.
  • Common mistake: chasing views alone. Watch time and retention tell you far more.
