Social commerce — Selling inside social apps
Selling products directly through social media and messaging apps, from discovery to purchase.
What it means
Social commerce means selling products through social media and messaging apps. A customer discovers a product, asks questions and often buys it without visiting a separate website. In India, common examples include WhatsApp catalogues, Instagram shopping features such as product tags where they are available, and Meesho, which is widely known as a social-commerce platform where many people resell products to their own contacts.
How it works
The journey usually happens inside one or two apps:
- Discovery: a person sees a Reel, post or status update featuring a product
- Conversation: they tap to message the seller or view a catalogue
- Purchase: they pay using a link, UPI or an in-app option, depending on the platform
- Sharing: happy buyers forward products to friends and family
Features differ by platform and by country, and they change often. A shopping feature launched abroad may not be available in India, so check what your platform currently offers.
A simple example
A Surat saree shop posts short Reels showing new festive collections. Each Reel invites viewers to message the shop on WhatsApp. When someone messages, the shop shares its WhatsApp catalogue with prices, photos and fabric details. The buyer picks a saree, pays the shop through UPI, and receives a tracking update on WhatsApp. Suppose one Diwali Reel brings 40 enquiries and 12 orders; the shop can see clearly which video led to sales.
Why it matters
Many Indian customers like asking questions on chat before buying. Social commerce removes extra steps, builds trust through real conversations and lets small sellers compete without a large website or big budget.
Beginner tips
- Keep your catalogue updated with clear photos, prices and stock status.
- Reply to messages quickly; slow replies lose interested buyers.
- Track which posts lead to enquiries and orders, not just likes.
- Common mistake: assuming a shopping feature you saw in a foreign video works the same way in India.
