WhatsApp marketing — WhatsApp Business for brands

Using WhatsApp Business to share updates, answer questions and sell to customers who have opted in.

What it means

WhatsApp marketing means using WhatsApp to talk to customers: sharing offers, answering questions, sending order updates and selling. In India, many customers prefer messaging a business on WhatsApp to filling a form. The key rule is simple: only message people who have agreed to hear from you.

How it works

There are two main options:

  • WhatsApp Business app: free, for small businesses. It offers a business profile, a product catalogue, quick replies, labels to sort chats, and broadcast lists that reach contacts who have saved your number.
  • WhatsApp Business Platform (API): for larger businesses, usually set up through an approved provider. It supports many team members, automated replies, chatbots and approved template messages for things like order alerts. Costs apply, and pricing changes, so check current rates with Meta or your provider.

Customers must opt in, for example by messaging you first or ticking a clear checkbox. India's Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023 also expects businesses to collect personal data with consent and use it responsibly.

A simple example

A Surat saree shop adds a "Message us on WhatsApp" button to its Instagram profile. Customers who message get a quick reply with the catalogue. The shop labels chats as "new enquiry", "paid" or "delivered". Before Navratri, it sends a broadcast about new chaniya cholis to customers who saved its number and agreed to receive updates. Suppose 15 reply asking for prices; the shop follows up personally.

Why it matters

WhatsApp feels personal and familiar. It helps businesses build trust, answer doubts quickly and turn conversations into sales.

Beginner tips

  • Set up a complete business profile with hours, address and catalogue.
  • Use quick replies for common questions, but keep a human touch.
  • Send only useful, occasional updates and make it easy to opt out.
  • Common mistake: adding people to groups or messaging bought number lists without consent. That is spam and can get your number blocked.
